- With a population of 21 million, the country counts three principal ethnic groups: Romanian (majority), Hungarian, Romani (gypsy) and Saxon. The latter once numbered 900,000 but rapid out-migration in recent decades has reduced the number to about 90,000.
- Modern Romania was established in 1862 as a country by that name and until 1947 was a parliamentary monarchy. A 40-year period of communism followed until its overthrow and abolition in December of 1989.

Visas: Not required for US and EU citizens
Climate: Distinct four seasons (conditions in southern Wallachian plains vary greatly from Carpathian mountain zones)

Language: The dominant language is of Latin origin; English is widely spoken; also Hungarian, German and French.
