MAP of BRAN
The Commune of Bran lies at the northern entrance to a 50 miles-long N-S mountain pass used for several millenia as a primary trade route between the orient and Europe. Romans traveled this route; Teutonic Knights settled in Brasov as a crusader outpost; Turkish armies invaded and later German armies in WW I. The Bran Castle - built in the 1200s- guarded movement into Transylvania and controlled a customs house.
The Inn on Balaban Hill lies on a low ridge with border forests, hayfields, and vegetable patches kept by villagers in the valleys below.
Walking trails abound and provide easy hiking entry into the Bucegi Mtns (east) and the Piatra Craiului Mnts (west) ... Further west are the peaked Fagaras Mnts.
